Fall Skincare Guide

By: Haley Hill, Holistic Esthetician

Fall is the season of grounding, gratitude for the harvest, looking within, identifying sadness, releasing grief, and letting go.

What Does Fall Mean For Your Skincare Routine?

The arrival of Fall signifies a time to direct our focus toward nurturing the skin for the colder seasonal weather changes. As we say goodbye to the warmer days and UV rays, we welcome the brisk mornings and chilly evenings. The colder temperatures can have a strong pull on our hydration levels and nourishment of the outer layers of the skin. It is important to select products designed to send nutrients to the deeper layers of the dermis to help maintain skin health throughout the Fall season.

How to Achieve Optimal Fall Skin

Our skin health is directly connected to the inner workings of our hormonal, emotional, and gut health. Be sure to incorporate tools and products into your skincare regimen that will help nurture all aspects of our bodies during this time.

Here are a few tips for maintaining optimal skin health throughout the Fall  :

  1. Boost the levels of hydration from within the deeper layers of the skin. Consider using ocean-based botanical skincare products that have specific ingredients for restoring and maintaining the skin’s pH barrier.

  2. Use a product that will increase the rate of cellular turnover of the outer layer of the skin. Think retinol based topical treatments, pumpkin enzyme masks, or a physical exfoliant.

  3. Essential oils can help to remove bacteria and other harmful pollutants in our home environments that can directly affect our skin. Try using a mixture of Clove bark, Tangerine, & Frankincense in a diffuser in the common spaces of your home.

  4. As always, proper hydration is imperative in maintaining skin health. Make sure you are drinking enough water and using an electrolyte supplement on the days we need an extra boost.

  5. Maintain a proper gut health protocol with your acupuncturist

Essential oils for the Fall season

Essential oils can have multiple purposes, which is probably the most important factor when it comes to knowing how to properly use them. Diffusing oils to purify the air, applying certain oils topically in specific points on the body, and my favorite – aromatherapy.

  • Tangerine - Tangerine oil can help improve the appearance of skin when added to a nightly cleanser and provides a delightful, invigorating aroma when diffused. Citrus oils are also said to help boost our natural immunity to sickness entering the body.

  • Cinnamon Bark - The warm and spicy scent of cinnamon helps connect our parasympathetic nervous system to the essence of the Fall season. Cinnamon can be used to help activate a specific point on the body with a warm and tension-relieving sensation (great alternative to peppermint oil).

  • Clove - Clove is an amazing oil to diffuse to help keep the air we breathe crystal clear. Also considered beneficial in keeping our oral health in check when added to mouthwash or toothpaste. Also gives that warm and cozy aroma of the Fall season.

 Facial Recommendations for Fall

Pumpkin for the Skin

Why is pumpkin connected to skin health? Pumpkins have the power to penetrate deep into the skin to provide many benefits. It is full of the antioxidants, Vitamin A and Vitamin C, that both help to soften and soothe dry skin. Use a pure pumpkin oil to help remove any makeup or earth elements and boost the hydration of the skin surface.
