Your Summer Skincare Guide
By: Holistic Esthetician Haley Hill
Summer ushers in the warmer weather, feelings of expansion and growth, brightness, creativity, and traveling. It is a time for luxurious growth through selfless service. During this season, we are reminded to embrace feelings of connectedness with elements like the warmth of the sun and the healing rejuvenation of water on our skin.
What Does Summer Mean For Your Skincare Routine?
Summer is the season for glowing skin – from the inside out. As the hours of daylight linger and we spend an extended amount of time in the sun, our skin health should be top of mind.
Sun protection is 100% a must. We recommend using an all-natural SPF to cover 60-80 minutes of sun exposure. Make sure to reapply after being in the water as the skin is a very susceptible organ.
Saffron & Sage’s top pick for an everyday sunscreen is Project Reef, out of Maui, Hawaii. Not only does this sunscreen use all clean ingredients (which is a must in our opinion!) and leave your skin hydrated and smooth, but each product removes one pound of plastic from our oceans. Now that’s a sunscreen we can really get on board with!
How to Achieve Optimal Summer Skin
The focus for maintaining hydration in the skin during the summer season is directly connected to how well we protect our skin from pollutants and UV rays.
Here are a few tips for maintaining skin health throughout the summer :
Hydration: Use a mask to repair the skin’s hydration barrier. Our Summer Seasonal Facial includes our favorite hydrating treatment - a Watermelon Enzyme Mask. In combination with a deep clean and steam, this seasonal facial helps repair the surface layer of the skin as well as help reduce the appearance of texture on the epidermis. Watermelon contains high levels of hydration factors which benefit not only our skin, but the hydration of our entire body. Fruit enzymes also work as a natural non-chemical alpha hydroxy acid to remove the dead layer of skin cells from the surface of our skin. This eliminates the extra step of exfoliating the skin in our skincare routines. Book your Summer Facial and then grab the watermelon mask from the boutique on your way out to keep your skin looking dewy and fresh all season long.
Nourish - A hyaluronic acid serum formulated to prepare the skin for hydration and to support the firming and supple appearance of the skin. Made in small batches using only the highest quality ingredients, this serum replenishes the vitamins needed to heal the skin from sun exposure and provides a dose of antioxidants to the skin. It also looks and smells beautiful.
What to do when your skin has had too much sun exposure:
Use a cooling lotion to help relieve any sensations of burn or heat from the surface layer of the skin. Another wonderful natural source of healing and cooling to the skin after excessive sun exposure is aloe vera. Try keeping fresh cut aloe vera plant stems in the freezer for an extra dose of skin cooling. Apply the cut end of the stem directly to the skin and work in circular motions for 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat as needed.
Make sure to use a moisturizer that helps repair the protection barrier of the skin's surface. Restore contains sea kelp, which is naturally derived from the ocean and is known to help restore and protect our skin from the earth's elements.
Should I get a Summer Facial?
Absolutely! Skin health is just as important as a regular trip to the dentist or doctor – especially during the warmer months. As we layer up our sunscreen and spend more time out in the environment, we expose our skin to multiple factors that can cause congested pores and dehydration. Healthy summer skin care should ideally include a monthly facial but can also be done weekly depending on your skin concerns.
